THE ORIGINAL FOWEY MUSSEL
Westcountry Mussels of Fowey Limited is based in Fowey, Cornwall, and is the original “Fowey” Mussel.
We specialise in offshore mussels and, weather dependent, we will be out at sea harvesting mussels every day, all year round.
Our mussels have clean light shells and plump orange meats enabling our customers to have more mussels per kilo with a creamy distinct flavour. Our mussels are grown in the highest grade of water quality in the country. The clean ocean waters provide the very best product available.
Our mussels are taken out of the purification tank and bagged up on the hour of despatch, ensuring that the product is as fresh as possible, therefore giving the mussels a greater shelf life.
We now farm all our mussels in St Austell Bay in the rich, warm gulf stream which wraps around the Cornish coast, bringing its abundant nutrients and clean water – the mussels are in their element!
The business rapidly grew via word of mouth and future customers having the product in local restaurants and enquiring for the supplier. This method of advertisement has allowed the business to grow steadily for the last 10 years, doubling production year on year.
The new site has become packed with fish where there were none before, acting as a natural sanctuary giving shelter to large shoals of fish of every description.
As well as dolphins and rare seabirds all attracted by the abundance of food that the musselfarm attracts. A glimpse of the perfect eco system between nature and a commercial enterprise, more than just sustainable actually enriching the environment.
